Like in The death of Mr. Lazarescu , a very tragic thing hnapeped without anyone being malicious or even uncaring. The mother superior was not trying to hide anything, the nuns and the priest really went beyond the call of duty in helping the two girls, and they helped Alina the best they could. But that was the limit of their world mired in superstition (remember the black cross found in a split log) and in the idea that the will of God and the word of God is the ultimate provider (the priest).I am Romanian, and although I am not from the eastern Romania, where the action hnapeped, I worked and lived there for a while, and I think that the movie was very realistic and it was very well filmed and acted. And I am not sure that it is even between the two choices for Voichita, or for Alina. It is more about a way of living your life Alina was always a fighter and defended herself and her friend while in the orphanage. Voichita was offered the protection of the monastery from a very insecure life outside, and a purpose.Lately Romanian cinematography has risen from its ashes and although the movie is long, it is worth watching. The translation is very good and when there is something not identical, it is because it wouldn't be idiomatic in English.
