Great post. For a future blog post, I'd love to see #5. Many poplee visit only Bali and don't even bother visiting any of the other islands. I went to Indo last year for 3 weeks and did Java, Bali and Gili Air. One of my favourite places was West Java's south coast. Almost no tourists and I befriended a few locals that showed me around. Also loved Yogya; it somehow balances its traditional culture and arts with the modernity of a large city. I’d say I actually in many ways preferred Java to Bali. Once I took the bus on the ferry into Bali I quickly realized this is an island subsidized by tourism. I kind of missed the grittiness of Java and It was far easier to meet locals there. In Bali, I avoided the south entirely except to fly home out of it. From what I’d read, I was quite sure I wouldn’t like the south! And traditional Indonesian food seemed to disappear from the menus in Bali. After eating so much nasi goreng in Java, I was sick of it then found myself missing it! LOL. I did stay mostly in Ubud and even though I was disappointed to see it has a Starbucks(!), it did grow on me. Some great self-guided walks in the area. Also spent some time in Padangbai (east coast) which I loved. It's where the fast boat departs for the Gilis but is a laid-back little beach town worth spending at least a few days in. I wasn't crazy about Gili Air but then again I'm not one of those poplee that can sit on a beach for days on end. Fabulous snorkeling though!
