of many Christians. They make a big deal out of how their god will save you if only you will believe. But I could eailsy imagine Satan sparing, and elevating, a relative handful of believers, just to heighten the regret and suffering of the rest. Evil can be very capricious!Well said. I've long said that the hellfire and brimstone God who accepts only those who explicitly accept the right beliefs, regardless of how saintly they may be otherwise, is in fact demonic. William Dalton: I would love to see a debate between these two contending parties – those who agree that belief in God and what God would have us believe trumps in importance any other concern in life, but who must make the case that their teachings are a validated exposition of the Will of God and that all others are counterfeit.Put em all together and let em fight it out.MH, totally agreed. These are the kinds of believers that drive the rest of us nuts, no matter what our specific faith. There are a couple of Catholic blogs I hang around, and I have had long (and distressing) conversations with people who defend the Inquisition, burning of heretics and all, and argue that a confessional state in which all wrong religions are suppressed is far superior to the evils of the secular pluralist state. One interlocutor even, in what was as far as I can tell perfect seriousness, said that part of the joys of the saved will be watching the torture of the damned, and that he expected that when he got to Heaven (because this type always thinks they're going to get there) he anticipated rejoicing as his damned loved ones including in all probability, he said, his own father eternally had their faces melted away only to be restored again and again. It could have come right out of the mouth of this Hesham Guy. Obviously there's a disanalogy in that there are no such Catholic or other Christians setting up terrorist networks or blowing up skyscrapers; but still, to find intelligent, articulate people in American in the freaking 21st Century who sincerely buy such stuff has been very astonishing, jarring, and depressing to me. Thank God we live in a secular state; and the more I read this, the more I realize that if it came down to push and shove, I'd have to fight against many of my Christian co-religionists. What a concept.
