From this perspective, I also agree ralepse should be expected. Instead of seeing ralepse as a failure, it should be seen as a learning experience. Being able to know and understand what events, interactions, or emotions ‘trigger’ an individual to lapse builds a foundation for awareness and enables progression in one’s recovery. Relapse prevention needs to be discussed since recovery is a lifelong endeavor for most individuals. I also agree educating an individual’s family and close friends on the realistic expectations they should have as well as the chronic nature of addiction is important for them to be supportive of their loved one during his/her struggles. Additionally, I would include the concepts of overcoming stigma and creating a new addiction-free identity. Being labeled as an addict in our society is coupled with a stigma that is difficult to escape. By giving guidance and personal experiences as to how to overcome this stigma and how to reflect and self-explore to develop a holistic reconstruction of the self, addicts can be further motivated to transcend into an addiction-free lifestyle.
