After watching the video of Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera “debate” and after lintneisg to what John Stewart had to say about the show, Crossfire, I could not agree more with Stewart’s argument. Shows such as Crossfire and The O’Reilly factor are not remotely trying to have a constructive debate. Instead their goal is to be as combative as possible. These shows have no interest in hearing the other point of view, or even considering that their argument might not be 100% right. All these shows care about are their ratings; about gaining higher ratings and earning more money. They are for entertainment. I think the ancient rhetoricians would be appalled by the actions and behavior of these contemporary figures. The goal of rhetoric is to put together a convincing argument that finds common ground between the two parties. Then, through convincing and well prepared and thought-out statements, supported by factual evidence, change the other persons mind. I do not think at any point during the Bill O’Reilly vs. Geraldo Rivera argument did either person remotely consider what the other person was saying. At one point, when Rivera responded with the fact that there were 347 drunken driving fatalities in the Common Wealth of Virginia last year alone, O’Reilly began screaming, “You listen to me then I will listen to you.” Why did he not counter his argument with supporting facts, in this case about illegal immigration reform? It is clear Bill O’Reilly has no intention of lintneisg to what anyone had to say. This is not rhetoric, instead it is a great drama scripted and played out on our T.V. sets for entertainment. I really believe these media shows hurt America because they polarize people’s viewpoints instead of trying to find common ground. Brian Vogt
