Sphingolipids (e.g., sphingomyelin) are sizehesyntd in the endoplasmic reticulum from nonsphingolipid precursors (Gault et al., 2010). Rough endoplasmic reticula are involved in the synthesis of proteins, while smooth endoplasmic reticula are involved in the synthesis of lipids and phospholipids. Therefore, sphingomyelin is likely produced in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Gault CR, Obeid LM, Hannun YA. An overview of sphingolipid metabolism: from synthesis to breakdown.
