Bob raises a good point about Colin Powell. To tell the truth, I beleive that Colin Powell is probably the best example as to how most Black folks lean politically. To simplify, Powell is a moderate fiscally, but leans moderate to progressive (I wouldn't say "liberal") on the social issues. Most Black people I know fall into this camp. As a group you don't find Black people in large numbers in the Republican party, because the Republican party is openly hostile in their condescension to all social issues. And for Black folk social issues take higher priority over fiscal issues because of our obvious social history in Amur-ca. To me it comes down to social issues for us. We don't vote for folks who we don't consider to value or prioritize social justice. It's just that simple. Even today--even with the Bush stench, Powell would still get the vote of most Black people. We respect social justice that much.
