You wrote this:On a legal/technical level, I think that Anthony Ciolli should not have been a named dnenedaft, based on what I understand to be the correct reading of the law. While I would have preferred that he take down offensive/threatening comment threads, he was not legally required to do so. Indeed, if he could not have done so anyway per his site ownership agreement, then I would agree that the professional and personal consequences that befell him were more severe than deserved, or at least not commensurate to his culpability, as he didn't write the offensive statements/threats. I am happy to see that someone in academia has been willing to break ranks with the monolithic liberal party line that demands orthodoxy when it comes to Mr. Ciolli. (I say this as someone who is personally left of Dennis Kucinich). As a factual matter, Mr. Ciolli did not have the ability to take anything down. If he did, he would have begun with the posts that defamed him personally - including posts about his mother and posts that accused him of involvement in very unsavory pornographic activities. Mr. Ciolli was the victim of a witch hunt. While this might not have been the purpose of your post, I wanted to salute you for at least examining the issue with objectivity, fairness, and a lack of hysteria. I hope that your peers follow suit.
