edLast year, before the geenral election, the Nikkei Shimbun hosted a serial pro-USA symposia in Tokyo by inviting Joseph Nye and Richard Armitage. Mr. Japan-spinner made a comment on territorial disputes between China and Japan as well as ROK and Japan. Its generous tone sounded really good to the large number of anxious audience as he repeated a well-known diplomatic cliche like "US Government keeps neutral to territorial disputes, but Senkaku Islands is naturally covered by the US-Japan Security Treaty of 1960." One point very new to Japanese audience was his modest remark on Chinese Government position he had squeezed from his interview with the High Authorities before he came to the symposia: "They are doubtful if the Japanese leaders would deny the 1945-system." That sounded to me a warning to the would-be majority in the geenral election.Osamu Niikura
