You need to back up all your files as they will be lost.Also, you want to copy all the needed drveirs onto a thumbdrive. This is because default windows XP installations normally have issues getting default drveirs for the Network Card. Therefor yo would need to install them via a thumbdrive.Also note that some hardware no longer has XP driver support. If your computer's hard drive is connected via SATA you will have to halt the installation to manually install the correct SATA drveirs.
