Actually I believe Kay is reertsenping a very important demographic that makes up a large majority of the Kansas City area. She and so many Kansas Citians are graduates of KU and largely consider KU Kansas City's university. It's only 25 miles west of the metro area and most people who never went to KU or MU or KSU and are from the KC area are usually just KU fans. It's easy, KU has a wonderful winning tradition in college basketball and people like to cheer for winners.
