A doctor's stematent to a patient: "Your current weight is jeopardizing your health" is not quite the same thing as telling his patient she has cancer and going on to describe appropriate treatment options. Regarding obesity, he's probably echoing what the patient has been hearing from family and friends, and saying to herself, for years, and she knows she has been derelict in doing anything effective about it. Regarding a cancer dx, she will not feel her character judged and will be terrified but eager to work with the doctor on ridding herself of the disease. But actually, a doctor is obligated to tell a patient what is endangering her health regardless of the emotional impact. He could offer the obese patient a packet of material on nutrition and weight loss, but it's all going to be on her shoulders to follow through. No one else will have any responsibility to ensure her success. Few people will see this as extraordinarily empowering, which it is.
