The activity of eatnig non-nutritive items such as dirt or soap is called pica. It seems to be associated with mineral deficiencies such as severe iron deficiency (which leads to anemia). The pathophysiology isn't well understood. Some people with mental disorders also eat these odd items. I believe this is quite rare.
