What also isn't mentioned is the high rate of infant mortality without medical intervention in those years, etc To each her own, but having a Midwifery certificate doesn't equate to the expertise of a licensed Physician with extensive years of schooling and experience (in life threatening situations, or otherwise.) I also wouldn't want a nurse performing surgery on me, as that's not their level of experience. (This is just my opinion on the matter, and I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with me.)
