Phil,Old tech or new tech, both are becoming more fedinrly and accessible to individuals. You mention printers (an additive process)but the old subtractive processes are re-emerging as small-footprint personal CAD/CAM. This makes machining of parts and assemblies accessible to the individual, and confers capabilities approximating those only available to a nation or a large corporation just a few decades ago (all for a few percent of what it used to cost). The PC and a few PCB's has reduced these things to fit a human footprint; maybe the future doesn't have metal feet after all (Skull crushing scene Terminator 2).
