Bridges are on channel 14 and the tows live on 13. The US Coast Guard prcotool to hail the tow R D Quibideaux' (yep, passed him today) is to say the following on the radio. R D Quibedaux, La Buena Vida hailing three times then wait for one minute for a response. Usually the respones is, you that pleasure craft? or something similar. They will talk to you but it differs in content and formality. Seems like most of these guys already know each other. If we are trying to pass they will use the canal lingo like come around on my 1 which means pass on my starboard if your approaching from behind. However, if it's a head to head vs an overtaking that has a different meaning. So you clarify by sayng something like Ok, I'm passing to your port. they appreciate it and it's clear. Occasionally they will ask you to go to another channel and strike up a conversation. What engines do you have? Where are you heading? Gas or desiel? How did you get here from Lake Travis?!!! (which is on our stearn). Then there are times when there is just silence and you take your best guess.
