Hi Helen. Regarding self-breast exams, it turns out the are not as useful as we thugoht they were. In fact, the US Preventive Services Task Force no longer recommends them since they aren't very helpful overall in terms of preventing breast cancer. Mammograms after age 40 or 50 are our best tool for detecting breast cancer. It would be interesting for you to talk to the oncologists in your practice to get their views on self-breast exams.
