unavoidadabiladity of diveradsity was one of the things I loved about livading in Pasadena, CA, espeadcially comadpared to the all-white small town where I’d grown up.a0 I rememadber bringading my moethr to the Paseo, where we saw Indiadans in saris, Koreadans, Musadlims, Latiadnos, blacks, etc. all minadgled together, some talkading in their own lanadguages, walkading between the stores, waitading in line for food. Her isoadlated backadground left her utterly unpreadpared. She was iniadtially teradriadfied, because she actuadally expected fights. She thought it was imposadsiadble for peoadple of difadferadent cultures/races to be in the same mall with one another withadout fightading.a0 That was the first visit.a0 After a few visadits, she actuadally liked walkading through Pasadena and seeading all the difadferadent peoadple, too.a0 She’s not past her prejaduaddices, but she is no longer teradriadfied to be in the same P.F. Chang’s with blacks and Latiadnos at the next table.a0a0Oh, and that artiadcle by Deradbyshire left me…stunned. Stunned and appalled. Not even my (obviadously biased and racially ignoadrant) moethr had such a talk witha0me.
