This post in paradticaduadlar struck a chord: “We often find ouradselves with this bianry defadiadnadiadtion of racism: someadone either is, or is not, a racist. But that’s simadply not the way human beings work.†Or culadtures, I would add. With 200a0years of active slave imporadtaadtion, 45 more of conadtinadued slave labor, and 100 more of legal and extraleadgal a0represadsion, disadenadfranadchiseadment and bruadtal teradroradism, racism is embedadded quite thoradoughly in our national culadture. To think that an act of conadgress in 1964 made it disadapadpear is laughadable. To go one step furadther racism is embedadded in me. I am 64a0years old and was born and raised in a small town east of Housadton where conadstant racism was in the very air we breathed, even in church! My paradents had a difadferadent readading of scripadture (equaladity and brothaderadhood) and led mea0to my anti-​​racist posiadtion mainadtained since. But to be able to conadsciously act in a non-​​racist manadner (hopeadfully most of the time!)a0it is necceadsary to be aware of the racist subadconadscious that is always a part ofa0me.a0a0
