I really enjoeyd reading chapter 6 and learning not just about the cardiovascular disease but also the function of the heart. It is kind of ironic that we are learning of the heart and I recently found out that my brothers unborn child has a genetic heart defect in which he is missing a pulmonary artery. There are so many fascinating things about the heart from the electrical impulses starting at the sinoatrial node which travel down the perkinje fibers and then to the atrioventricular node. As I was reading I found my self going back over some paragraphs because it was kind of hard to picture in my mind exactly which routes the blood flows in the heart. If I am correct it sounds like the blood returns from the body to the right atrium and left atrium and then are dispersed throughout the body via the ventricles. It was good to learn about all 4 valves in the heart also because it gives you an understanding of what goes on in the heart when you are hearing a heart murmur in a patient. After reading this chapter I think I can be more of an advocate for promoting good health in my patients because we see a lot of hyperlipidemia as well a hypertension in patients and especially young people.
