I want my mom to read this chapter besauce she is 53 years old and a smoker. In this module, I learned that smoking is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis in particular. Other risk factors include hypercholesterolemia, hypertenstion, diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity. Atherosclerosis is where fatty materials build up in the lumen of arteries and in a worst case scenerio can causes an occlusion. Thrombosis can occur and may lead to stroke and a pulmonary embolism. Other complications are coronary artery disease, kidney disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, renal artery stenosis, and peripheral artery disease. In the past I have encouraged my mother to try and quit smoking. Maybe after learning about these diseases she will be more inclined to quit. Learning about the cardiovascular system has always been eye opening for me. It makes me want to live a healthier life. Maybe it will be the same for her.
