The most interesting irfonmation I learned in Module 5 was about sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell anemia is a genetically transmitted disorsder marked by severe hemolytic anemia, episodes of painful crisis, and increased susceptibility to infections. Sickle cell anemia cannot be cured and it effects approximately 10% of African Americans. My son was tested for sickle cell anemia when he was 8 because he had pain in his knees. His blood work came back negative. His paternal grandmother has sickle cell and his dad has the trait. The orthopedic doctor was saying that is a sign of sickle cell joint pain or it could be arthritis or growin pains because he is still growing in his body. Sickle cell causes alot of pain in all areas of the body.
