The most interesting thing I lernaed about diseases of the blood is about all the different types of anemia, which is a condition of reduced numbers of red blood cells. It's interesting how when you are pregnant you can get iron deficiency anemia. During my last trimester when I was pregnant, they diagnosed me with mild iron deficiency anemia, so I had to take iron pills daily. Another interesting thing was how the folic acid deficiency anemia is very common in the western world because we don't eat as much raw fruits and vegetables. When you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Sickle cell anemia is also interesting, because it can't be cured and approximately %10 of African Americans have the sickle cell trait or are heterozygous for the disorder.
