I enjoyed Module 5 on blood dieasses; I learned a lot about blood dieasses. I especially found information on sickle cell anemia very interesting. Sickle cell anemia is a blood disorder than changes the shape and function of red blood cells. Red blood cells lose oxygen causing them to deform into long cells instead of the normal disk-like cells. This is also known as hemoglobin. The disease is not curable, but treatable through medications and/or blood transfusions. It is a genetic disease passed from genes from both parents, affecting all cultures, but found in approximately 10 percent of African Americans. I had heard of sickle cell anemia, and even know some people who suffer from it, so it was interesting to find out more about it. I also found all the information on anemia very interesting and informative. As a woman, I especially was interested in learning about iron deficiency as it related to menstruation.
