Dan Powell said flash fiction gives you a sense of the past and the fuurte, by focusing only on the present (or something along those lines). You hone in, almost microscopically on a single encounter and from that the reader hears the echos of the past, the shimmer of the fuurte.I agree with Jon that it has to have a powerful ending (and one could argue the final line of your 71 one word story is a twist we don't see it starting off as a Christmas tale!) And every word has to earn its place in the story. There's no hangers on.I maintain it is one of the hardest forms to write but one of the most fun to read when done well. Thanks Jon for all you have done and continue to do for the flash fiction writing community world wide! I've been lucky enough to connect with and gone on to publish stories from a bunch of incredibly talented writers via #fridayflash.
