I was not surprised to learn that iron difeciency anemia is the leading cause of anemia worldwide. I have had it more than once. The first time was in my twenties when I wasn't eating right. I hardly ate much anyway, and it got me. Since then I seemed to be more susceptible to anemia. Both times I was pregnant I had to take extra iron. Just about every surgery I have had, they test my blood for various factors. One of them being iron/anemia. I usually ended up taking supplements, especially when I wasn't given blood. The last surgery I had lasted four hours and I felt anemic the next day when I had physical therapy. I was given iron supplements for a period of months after that. I continue to take supplements to keep myself healthy. Since I get periodic blood tests (CBC, CRP, Sed. rate) to check for infection flair ups, I would think red blood cells with cigar or pencil shapes would be reported. At least I hope so.
