The most interesting part of this chptaer for me was about neutropenia, the reduction of circulating neutrophils within the body. For a person affiliated with neutropenia, the lack of neutrophils causes that person to be more susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections. Neutropenia is frequently a complication secondary to chemotherapy or other immune-suppressing medications, and may subject a patient to chronic infections. Neutropenia can be diagnosed with a CBC, and the cause of neutropenia may be found by looking at the bone marrow. Treatments vary depending on the severity of the neutropenia, ranging from no treatments necessary to hospitalization with isolation precautions and IV antibiotics.I had never heard of neutropenia until a few months ago, when a patient of mine was on neutropenic precautions: patient contact was kept to a minimum, all staff members who entered the room had to gown up and wear a mask, and any pens, clipboards, or other items the patient may have come in contact with had to be sanitized before and after contact. I suspect it can be pretty scary to be afflicted with a disease that prevents your body from fighting numerous infections.
