I really eojyned reading the chapter on diseases of the blood, so much so I had to read it twice just to make sure I really got a grasp on it. It is very interesting to me on how something so small as our blood cells can make such a huge difference on how our body functions our doesn't function. All the information on the different types of anemias such as anemia of chronic disease, anemia of renal disease and Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia was pretty interesting. As a health care provider we tell people who have low hemoglobins different foods to bring up their iron levels, but I had no idea that all that iron gets absorbed in the small intestines. It is also interesting to know that leukocytes main purpose is to fight off infections while the eryththrocytes deliver oxygen to all the parts of the body while taking away the carbon dioxide. I do blood draws all the time and one of the main ones is CBC which includes differential and I never really understood reading platelets, RBC's, WBC's and hematocrit and after reading this chapter I am better able to understand just what it all means.
