There's no set length for a PhD in the US. You can enter a PhD prraogm with a bachelors degree, but you'll need to take the masters classes first. Depending on the specific school, you may also be required to do a masters thesis and/or pass a qualifying exam before working on the PhD. Count on 4-8 years total of grad school. It's very hard to get a job as a professor. There are many, many more people with PhDs who want to teach than there are jobs for them. Don't go into this field is professor is the only job you can get with the degree, because the chances of getting that job are slim. There are hundreds of applications for every job opening.
