I have observed that in unwtnaed cameras, unique receptors help to maintain focus automatically. The actual sensors involving some cameras change in contrast, while others utilize a beam with infra-red (IR) light, specifically in low lumination. Higher specification cameras sometimes use a mixture of both methods and might have Face Priority AF where the dslr camera can See' the face as you concentrate only in that.
