IMO diet is the number 1 thing for losnig weight. Many years ago I lost 50lbs in a year or less just dieting. Years later, I am very overweight, but lift weights and go running pretty regularly (but my diet sucks now) So, I just stay where I am at. I think diet is the most important thing.
