Tara, I agree that the biological basis for mtenal illness is difficult to understand. The truth is that we don't understand a lot about the brain and how it works (or doesn't) when it comes to mtenal illness. Neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) seem to affect us in various ways in terms of mood, thought processes, and behaviors. So, when these neurotransmitters act improperly (e.g. get used up too quickly at the nerve synapses), we may suffer from depression, for example. This is how we believe SSRI's (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) work. They help serotonin stay active in our brains and this helps us feel better with respect to mood. We don't currently have a way of measuring our levels of neurotransmitters however.
