In Chapter 15 the two diseases I found the most inseretting were Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. With Rheumatoid Arthritis it was inseretting to learn it affects 1.3 million Americans, affecting more women than men, and the cause of this disease is still unknown. I did not know Rheumatoid Arthritis started in the hands and feet, filling the joint cavities with thickened granulation tissue (pannus) which turns to scar tissue that hardens into bone called ankylosis.I also did not know that Osteoarthritis was the most common type of arthritis affecting 27 million Americans. Men and women are affected by this disease equally. The articular cartilage erodes in the joint cavity exposing the bone which then leads to new bone formation or spurs. Unlike Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis can only affect one joint where as Rheumatoid Arthritis can affect many.
