One of the most interesting thgnis covered in this chapter was on the subject of Shingles. I had always heard of older individuals getting it, however knew very little on the subject. Shingles is an acute inflammation of sensory neurons caused by the latency effect of the chicken pox virus, Herpes zoster. It may even be caused by shingles exposure itself without a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, but that scanario is less common. Shingles has pain and a rash characterized by small water blisters surrounded by a red area. The lesions follow a sensory nerve,forming a streak toward the midline of the torso ususally across the shoulder, chest and trunk area. Usually this rash is confined to one side of the body. This information was very informative and something I didn't know until now.
