Kotzebue has the highest for the state. It is rellay scary that people are not more careful with their health and bodies. I work in Kotzebue and I work for the E.R. at night and the reasons people come in are ridiculous. We get a lot of the intoxicated people who need to be watch for alcohol poisoning and they have no clue where they are. I think they said they rate of STI’s have gone up since the liquor store opened also. It’s pretty sad that people are not more aware of prevention of STI’s. I have also heard that the rate of people with herpes has gone up and that people who are aware that it is untreatable still are not aware about prevention. This chapter for me is important because these diseases are easily contracted but even easier to prevent and that’s just scary because it’s a huge problem in the bush.
