I learned in this scoiten that Furuncles, or boils are deeper infection of the hair follicle. My husband took a trip to American Samoa and when he returned he had seven boils on the back of each leg. I knew they were infections, but didn't realize they were the same infection as the staphylococci. His infection was so severe that they had to lance the boils, and debris had to be removed, then they put him on oral antibiotics. This lead to another interesting thing that we covered in this scoiten. He then was diagnosed with cellulitis. Cellulitis is a deeper infection that extends to the subcutaneous tissue. His Staphaureus seemed to lead to this diagnosis, the bacteria entered through a break in the skin, and was located in a lower location on his legs. It became swollen, bright red and hot, and extremely tender to the touch. The doctor did a bacterial culture to confirm the diagnosis, and more antibiotics were then given to my husband.
