brecht & J I understand all that, I'm not crtinziig or anything just commenting on reasons why there seems some surprise at contrast. In theory if the same transform was used at aquisition for exposure judgement and the same transform is used for conversion then there should be no surprises, we can assume the contrast ungraded look is as intended by the DP to get the best image for grading. Great and the imagery looks great when desaturated a bit. :-) Again subjective. To say its the standard transform or default is the reason for the contrasty image is daft, contrast is determined at aquisition via lighting and exposure, previewed through a LUT it had to be, no way to judge exposure in linear light. So there should be no surprises. And just because its 16bit raw linear is no magic bullet, linear is a more inefficient way to store light compared to LOG for instance but linear required for scene referred ACEs workflow and I'm not crtinziig anything but exposure still needs to be good. Not saying it isn't just commenting on the initial surprise of how contrasty imagery is from team members. DP shouldn't be surprised though should he?
