Alzheimer's disease was the most iitnrestneg part of this chapter to study. My grandfather died of Alzheimer's and my mother had cared for him all the way through the illness. I didn't realize that 4.5 million people annually are affected by this horrible disease in the Unites States. Nor did I realize, it affects about 5% of men and women age 65 to 74 and about 50% of those over age 80. I knew that the causes were unknown, but not that certain mutations in chromosomes and inheritance of two high-risk genes are associated with a greater risk for developing Alzheimer's. My mother adopted me as a teenager and for this I am greatful not to carry on the genetic inheritance. Two years later my grandmother also passed away, also from what was diagnosed as dementia. She had episodes of hallucintions and would scream from seeing things like clowns in the front yard of our home. Care-givers for these individuals should be closely assisted, and reach out to support groups whenever possible. My mother did this, and it made surviving through the ordeal much easier for her to cope.
