Chapter 15 had a lot
Chapter 15 had a lot of information. I was uaawnre that there are so many different disease processes that affect the musculoskeletal system. One disease I learned a lot about and has actually affected my life directly is scoliosis. Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curving of the spine. This disorder is most commonly indentified in childhood. Scoliosis usually caused by abnormal fusion of the vertebrae or my also have a neuromuscular origin. Scoliosis can also be caused by diseases like polio, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. Mild curvatures of the spine (20 degrees or less) may require no treatment, whereas more severe curvatures (30 degrees or more) must be treated with braces or surgery. The second section I found most interesting was on bone cancer. I was surprised to find that bone cancer is actually very rare, accounting for only about 1% of malignancies and is most common in men. The majority of bone cancer is secondary to another from of cancer that has metastasis. One kind on cancer called, osteogenic sarcoma, arises in the bony tissue itself commonly found in the ends of long bones. The cause of osteogenic carcinoma is unknown, one symptom being dull localized bone pain the gets worse at night. Bone cancer can be diagnosed with x-rays, CT scans and biopsy.
