The two parts that interested me the most was about lubmar punctures and Parkinson's disease. Lumbar punctures are used to diagnose infections, such as meningitis. Meningitis can be viral or bacterial and there is a vaccine available for viral meningitis. People who suffer from meningitis can suffer permanent brain damage, which may include hearing or sight loss, paralysis, mental retardation, or death. Lumbar punctures can also be used to test for blood (which would show bleeding, like a subarachnoid hemorrage) or the CSF pressure within the spinal column. I observe lubmar punctures at work on occasion. They are interesting to watch.Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disease that affects muscle control and coordination. It affects about 1.5 million Americans, and more men than women have the disease. It usually strikes around age 45, and is caused by a loss of a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine suppresses unwanted movements, and the lack of this transmitter results in tremors. Unfortunately, Parkinson's is a progressive disease, and can cause tremors, rigid muscles and a loss of reflexes. It can also cause a mask-like facial expression in some patients. My grandfather had Parkinson's. It was hard to watch his body decline while his mind was still very sharp.
