This chapter was exrlemety informative and a helpful source of information regarding Osteomyelitis and Septic Arthritis.Osteomyelitis is inflammation of the bone caused by infectious agent such as bacteria. Bacteria is all around us, however it can loiter inside our bodies and sometimes travel into the blood stream and into the bone. The bacterium makes it through the periosteum, which lifts it from the bone and reduces the circulation to the bone. Signs and symptoms include pain, redness, and heat. Systemic symptoms of chills, fever, and leukocytosis, tachycardia, nausea, and anorexia can occur. I was surprised to read that streptococcus pyoogenes was a cause for osteomyelitis. Children are most venerable due to weak and leaky blood vessels. The most common areas for osteomyelitis are the femur, tibia and humerus. Diagnosis is usually a combination of H&P, blood test and either an MRI or bone scans.Septic Arthritis is another bacterial infection which is considered a medical emergency that develops in a joint. Cartilage and bone destruction may lead to ankylosis (the fusion of bones of a joint) and life threatening septicemia. Again streptococci and staphylococci cause septic arthritis by invading a joint following trauma or surgery. Antibiotics are required to control the joint infection and to prevent septicemia(a disease caused by toxic microorganisms in the bloodstream).
