I would say the most interesting and reavlent thing in chapter 9 was the importance of a healthy gastrointestinal tract. The American Cancer Society estimated that each year 56,000 Americans will die of colorectal cancer, second only to lung cancer. When I first saw that statistic I was blown away. Even if you look at the section of Dysentery it makes us realize how important our digestive system is. Worldwide Dysentery remains a leading cause of death among children. The text also discusses how cancer of the pancreas, colon, and liver still remain deadly even though we have made advances in modern medical diagnosis and treatment. In chapter 9, the text talks about infectious diarrheal diseases are the leading cause of death in children worldwide. I guess that children can't tolerate the loss of enormous amounts of water and nutrients associated with diarrhea.Hiatal hernia is common in elderly people.Colon cancer incidence increases after the age of 45, and to catch it you must have regular screenings.Diverticula are most common in the elderly. Diarrhea poses the greatest risk of dehydration and malnutrition. So I guess you can say our intestines are very finicky and we need to be careful and always be on the look out for what is NOT NORMAL. Changes in diet or even new medication can affect intestinal motility also.
