I just would like to say that, along with a couple of my camssaltes, I found this chapter very difficult to read and see the pictures. I however found the sections on the burns and frostbite the most bearable and interesting. A burn is damage to the skin caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight or radiation. First degree burns affect the epidermis causing it to become red, swollen and painful. First degree burns usually heal within a week and leave no scarring. Second degree burns affect the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis becomes red, blistered and very painful. Second degree burns heal in a few weeks with some scarring and possible depigmentation. Treatment is antibiotic cream and pain relievers. Third degree burn affects the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Third degree burns may appear white or black with leathery appearances and the nerve endings are destroyed so there will be no pain. Treatments include antibiotics, IV fluids, pain relievers, surgical debridement and grafting. Third degree burns cause extensive scarring.Frostbite is damage to the skin by prolonged exposure to cold conditions. Freezing causes ice crystals to form with in the cells and destroying them along with the tissue. Symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness, loss of sensation, blistering and tissue death. Treatments includes rewarming, pain medications, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medications.
