Before and during my prneangcy with my third child, I had unexplained back pain below my right shoulder that would keep me awake through out the night about once a month. I would go to the doctor, they either looked at me like I was a drug seeker, or try to throw pain medicine at me (which I did not want as I was pregnant at this time). After and ultrasound was obtained, it was discovered that I had Cholelithiasis. The excruciating pain was refered pain. I found no mention of that type of pain in the part on gallbladder, interestingly. I wanted to wait to have a cholecystectomy until after my baby was born, but the surgeon told me if my gallbladder were to burst, it was a death sentence for the child. I was five months pregnant when I had my gallbladder removed, the biliary calculi was approximately the size of a peach pit. I do wonder where the bile goes when it leaves the liver when it no longer has a gallbladder in which to be stored.Pancreatitis is something we see often in the Emergency Room, most often in females who are or have been alcoholics. As the book indicates, they usually present curled up in the fetal position in obvious pain. I never knew the amylase blood test was one of the deciding factors in diagnosing pancreatitis.
