In chapter 11 I found the enrite chapter interesting. When I finish my program, I hope to find a position in a women’s clinic, so I found this chapter informative. One subject that really got my attention was the issue of STD's. I had no idea that 19 million new cases of STDs occur in the United States each year and half of those cases occur in kids 15-24 years old. I was stunned to learn that in 2006, Alaska ranked first in the United States with the highest number of cases of Chlamydia. Untreated chlamydial infections in pregnant women may cause premature delivery of the baby. Chlamydial infections are usually found in the eyes and/or respiratory tracts of newborns. Chlamydial is the leading cause of infant pneumonia and conjunctivitis. One thing I had never really thought about was what would happen to a child born to a mother with a STD. I learned that Gonorrhea in a newborn can cause blindness, joint infection, and a life threatening blood infection. I also learned that a pregnant woman, with active untreated syphilis will pass it along to her baby, resulting in still birth or neonatal death 25 percent of the time. If the baby survives to birth, he or she may immediately show signs of the disease. If there are no signs of syphilis at birth, symptoms usually manifest between 2 weeks to 3 months of age. Signs and symptoms include skin sores, rashes, fever, weakened or hoarse crying sounds, swollen liver and spleen, jaundice, anemia, and other deformities.
