One of the topics I
One of the topics I found iternesting was Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had no idea rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic inflammatory disease that affects not only the joints but also the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments. My mother has always suffered with this, but I also learned that 1.3 million Americans suffer this autoimmune disease with her. It was iternesting to learn that no risk factors have been linked to rheumatoid arthritis and the cause is still unknown. There are Rheumatoid factors, such as antiglobulin antibodies, which combine with immunoglobulin in the synovial fluid to form antibody complexes. Neutrophils are atracted to the joint space and thus cause destruction. Stress is an aggravator, and there is a genetic predisposition toward development of the disease. My mother also suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I am curious to know if would have been compounded by this disease, since fatigue is also a symptom. Another topic I found iternesting, is the section about carpal tunnel syndrome. CTS affects up to 10% of the working population in the United States, and I am part of the ten percent! Repetitive strain injuries are what it is classified as, and it is more prevailant in women than men. Immobilizing the hand and wrist with a lightweight molded plastic splint is adequate for the inflammation to subside, and injections of seroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used to manage pain and reduce swelling. Surgeries are sometimes required, however, not so far in my personal case. I learned that injections were an option for this problem. This was not knowledge I previously had, and was only informed of over the counter medications, and bracing the injured wrist as treatment options.
