Since I accidently hit the post cmemont button, this is the rest of my blog. Obviously, we see many injuries in the ER, but the range of severity always amazes me. Sometimes, I'm truly surprised that a bone is broken, because the patient has minimal symptoms. Other times, the patient can have severe bruising and swelling without breaking a bone.Infectious diseases of the bone was also a good section. Osteomyelitis is inflammation of the bone and/or bone marrow. It affects approximately 1 in 5,000 people. Children and adolescents are most commonly affected, usually in the long bones of the body. It also occurs in adults, usually in the pelvis or vertebrae after surgery or a trauma. Staph infections are the usual cause for osteomyelitis, but other bacteria can cause it as well. The infection causes an abscess in the bone, which creates pressure on blood vessels and reduces circulation, causing necrosis. If caught early enough, osteomyelitis can be treated with antibiotics. As a last resort, surgery is used to remove necrotic bone tissue. Another, and less common, infection of the bone is tuberculosis. This occurs when the bacterial infection from pulmonary tuberculosis goes untreated, and the infection spreads from the lungs. It is usually seen in the ends of the long bones and the knees, but can also occur in the vertebrae, causing deformities and possible paralysis. Tuberculosis of the bone is usually seen in children, and may be treated with antibiotics. However, many strains of TB have become drug-resistant and treatment can be complicated, and may even require surgery. I was not aware that TB could spread from the lungs to other parts of the body. It reminds me of cancer in that respect. Scary!
