The most interesting topic in this mluode was Autism. This is present in my family and I embrace any chance to learn about it. Autism affects 3.4 children out of every 1000. It is characterized by a lack of back and forth language called reciprocal language and social interactions. Autism can occasionally be diagnosed at infancy but usually at around age 3 is when most diagnoses are made. The etiology of Autism is not known. I found it very interesting that the occurrence rate in identical twins is an astounding 90%! Some symptoms include lack of eye contact, delayed language development, lack of interest in social interactions like “play dates” in the toddler years, hand-flapping, self-injurious behavior and unpredictable mood-swings. Treatment of Autism includes multi-modal treatment, and speech and occupational therapy. Parental support is crucial in the child’s ability to adapt to the disease and learn to be independent.I learned something new about post-traumatic stress disorder as well. This is something that my husband suffers from since returning from his tour in Afghanistan while serving as an ARMY Infantryman. The mluode explains that often times someone who suffers from this disorder feels guilty about surviving an event or guilty of the behavior or their actions in a war situation. My experience or what I have known is that of the night terrors and flashbacks. These are haunting to a person suffering from PTSD. This disorder is one that can be dealt with but typically is never going to go away.I also had never heard of personality disorders being clustered into three categories. Cluster A consists of paranoid and schizoid personalities. Cluster B consists of antisocial, borderline histrionic and narcissistic personalities. The last cluster is cluster C and it consists of avoidant, dependent and obsessive-compulsive personalities. Histrionic personality is one I had never heard of and this is when a person over exaggerates or their emotions.
