This chapter had a lot of inoamrftive information on mental illness and cognitive disorders. One section I found interesting was about schizophrenia. It affects about 1% of the U.S. population. Schizophrenia is often diagnosed during late teenage years or early adulthood. Signs and symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, social withdrawal, cognitive deficits, disordered thinking, and movement disorders. Schizophrenia’s have early symptoms which include depression, suspiciousness, restlessness, anxiety, not able to concentrate well. Schizophrenia has a 10% suicide rate and has a lower life expectancy than the general population. Risk of schizophrenia include genetics and environmental. Treatments offered for this disease are antipsychotic mediation, illness management therapy, psychosocial therapy, and family therapy, and cognitive therapy. Another section I found interesting was anxiety disorders. Panic attacks are brought on suddenly by fear or terror. Panic attacks are unpredictable. With panic attacks you will experience shortness of breath and chest pains. Another form of anxiety is phobia disorder which a fear of something that actually is little or no danger. Phobia disorder is the most common type of an anxiety disorder according to the book on page 401. Some examples of phobias would be strangers, the dark, large animals, being in small secluded rooms, and even being at high altitudes (climbing a mountain or flying). A couple other types of anxiety include Social phobia, generalized anxiety disorders, Post traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive –compulsive disorder. This chapter was a great and I learned a lot on different mental illnesses and on anxiety attacks. My personal experience I had with an anxiety disorder was the panic attack. I was worried when I had the attack because my left arm went numb, face was tingling, my leg was shaking, and my pulse went higher than I have ever experienced. It scared me more than anything. Since then I have not experienced a panic attack which I am very grateful for.
