One of the the topic
One of the the topics in this caphter I found interesting is on rickets. Rickets is a disease of infancy or early childhood in which the bones do not properly ossify, or harden. I have heard of rickets, but never fully understood them. It is a rare disease in the United States, but some infants that are fed an unfortified formula will develop it. A child with rickets has bones that bend and are soft. Some children become bow legged. Other symptoms or signs of rickets are delayed teething, a potbelly and flaccid muscles. Sunlight and vitamin-D fortified milk can help prevent rickets. I found in my research that they suggest children that are breast fed have a vitamin supplement for the vitamin D, because human breast milk has low amounts. I'm not sure about this, I breast fed my daughter for 14 months and she didn't have supplements and didn't end up with rickets. Children can also get an inherited form of rickets, not just the dietary caused rickets. The next topic I found interesting is on bursitis. Again, I have heard of it, but never knew much about it. Bursitis in an inflammation of bursa, which are small, fluid-filled sacs located near the joints that cushion and reduce friction on movement. It is a very painful condition that most often affects the shoulder joint. Bursitis can develop in any joint, and will result after repeated irritation and injury to specific bursa. There are 160 bursa in the body, and the major ones are located near the major joints of the body. A bursa can become inflamed from injury, infection, or because of an underlying rheumatic condition. Treatment of bursitis that is not caused by infection is cold compresses, rest, and anti-inflammatory or pain medications. If the cause is infection or septic bursitis, then aggressive antibiotic treatment is used.
